420 Trash Talkers: How the Cleanup Crew Works

By Lorrine Dodds

A passionate and environmentally educated International business student, Charlotte Quinn, 22, gave insight into the Trash Talk events.

The most recent Trash Talk took place on Wednesday 21st April. The 20th April celebrates 420 which is a day that celebrates cannabis, usually by smoking. Unfortunately big events like these result in big piles of litter.

Trash Talk events acknowledged the popularity of this date and arranged a litter pickup for the following day.

The event tries to cover areas of; Hyde Park, Headingley, Woodhouse and Burley. To get involved the volunteers meet up at Woodhouse Moore in the Bowls Square.

Volunteers are expected to download Strava to record their walk so that the event holders are able to quantify how much of Leeds has been covered.

Volunteers who download and use Strava were automatically entered into a prize draw to win a box of sustainable goodies. The box included many sustainable washeries such as plastic free shampoo and conditioner as well as treats like sustainable chocolate.

There is also a QR code given which opens Canva flashcards to show maps and prompts for mental health themed questions.

The event saw around 15 volunteers but had many taking interest on Facebook. Considering it was a Wednesday the turnout was successful, even though people may work full-time or have university deadlines.

Another Trash Talk event was held on Saturday 27th which had a larger turnout of about 22 volunteers, although there was less interest online.
