The price of a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) has been substantially reduced by the government, from £140 to just £5. A GRC is a certificate transgender people must obtain for their gender to be ‘legally recognized’.
Although there is still more work to be done regarding reforms of trans right, this is still a good step in the right direction. The cost reduction means a GRC will now be much more accessible to transgender people as although you can medically transition without one, you must still obtain one for a variety of reasons.
For example, to be married as the gender you identify with, to be legally recognized as a mother or a father of a child and to be held in the correct prison that correlates with your gender.
Most people do agree that the price reduction is a good thing, but do still believe more needs to be done about trans rights in the UK and around the world.
